Insider Tips: Experience the Best of Cape Cod in Springtime

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of spring in the air on Cape Cod. While the landscape is once again dotted with daffodils, and robins return to nest, so do many of our favorite visitors. Want to make the most of your getaway? We’ve got you covered…

Wicked Local Theater

Located right down the street and over the drawbridge from Woods Hole Inn, the Community Hall provides a charming setting for local theater, music, and dance. There’s one more weekend to experience the aptly titled “Weekend Comedy,” March 22-23, directed by Annie Hart Cool, which explores the ensuing hilarity when two couples of different ages accidentally book the same cottage. Annie also delights audiences with her own version of The Moth here in Woods Hole with “Soapbox Stories,” a dinner theater event featuring talented storytellers from the Falmouth community. Enjoy an entertaining line-up of tales by locals and a decadent prix fixe meal, right next door to the Inn at Quicks Hole Tavern. You have two more chances to catch Soapbox Stories this spring, on March 28 and April 25, but be sure to get your tickets in advance as this event is always a sell-out and seats are going fast.

The Village is also synonymous with the Woods Hole Film Festival in late summer, but you can catch special viewings all year long with “Dinner and a Movie.” These exclusive screenings are hosted at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Redfield Auditorium, right across the street from the Inn. Present your ticket prior to the film for discounts and special offers at village favorites, like the Captain Kidd, Water Street Kitchen, The Landfall, and Quicks Hole Tavern. Next up is “Brampton’s Own” on April 27, which tells the story of a struggling minor league baseball player who returns to his hometown.

Dine Local

The slower pace of the spring season is the perfect time to patronize a new place. Check out the array of high-caliber restaurants spanning Woods Hole Village to Main Street Falmouth to all of Cape Cod’s fifteen towns. If you’re looking to celebrate a special occasion, The Glass Onion returns after a short winter respite at the end of April, while this spring is the first for Estia on Main, the latest addition to Main Street’s restaurant row, featuring Greek music and fare. Check out Osteria La Civetta for decadent Northern Italian cuisine in an intimate setting or La Cucina Sul Mare, just down the street, for traditional Italian fare.

Each spring, Maison Villatte, Falmouth’s authentic French bakery, also re-opens after a brief winter break to the delight of all. While waiting in line, which moves quickly, peruse the pain au chocolate and the freshly baked baguettes, but be sure to get there early as the daily offerings go just as fast. Looking for the best in local seafood? We recommend taking a short drive to the Lobster Trap in Bourne, where the creative cuisine is served in a quintessential Cape Cod setting.

Explore and Unplug

Cape Cod is synonymous with summer, but the region boasts the best in natural offerings all year long. Explore by bike on the 11-mile Shining Sea Bike Path in Falmouth, which begins right near the Inn, or the Cape Cod Rail Trail, spanning 25 miles from South Dennis to Wellfleet. History and ecology intersect with the Cape Cod National Seashore, encompassing six beaches and more than 40,000 acres of dramatic dunes protected by President John F. Kennedy in 1961.

Follow the Sun

Whatever you do or wherever you go, you’re sure to catch a signature Cape Cod sunset. Some of our favorite spots include Stoney Beach, Nobska Beach and the Knob in Woods Hole/Quissett; Chapoquoit in West Falmouth; and the iconic clam trees at Rock Harbor in Orleans. Just like the US Postal Service, you can always count on Mother Nature to deliver a picturesque closing to a Cape Cod afternoon.
