Cyrille Aimée defies superlatives. Winner of the Montreux Jazz
Festival’s International Vocal Competition, the Sarah Vaughn
International Jazz Vocal Competition and finalist in the
Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition, French/Dominican vocalist
Cyrille Aimée is, in the words of Will Friedwald of The Wall
Street Journal, “one of the most promising jazz singers of her
Cyrille is from Samois-sur-Seine, France, also home to Django
Reinhardt (who’d be 107 years old this year) and site of the
legendary annual Django Reinhardt festival. When Cyrille was
young, she would sneak out her bedroom window at night to visit
the local Gypsies. She learned their language and sang by the fire
with Django’s descendants . . . before returning home prior to
sunrise and school. “I was hypnotized by this music,” said
Cyrille. “Swinging music makes me so happy.”
Recently Cyrille sang on Broadway in a Wynton Marsalis show. She
bounces from Europe to North America, from festival to club to
private engagement. Over the last five years since basist Jeremy
Bruyére introduced me to her music, I’ve seen her a dozen times,
and the music just makes me smile that silly grin every time.
We’re very, very, very fortunate to be able to host her in Woods
We’d be very, very, very fortunate to get guitarist Adrien
Moignard to come play by himself. Check the comments on the ‘net:
“I am totally blown away . . . incredible playing style and
impeccable technique . . . he’s ridiculous . . . Django didn’t
die, he just went back to his home planet and now he came back in
a younger looking body . . . ” Yeah, that’s how I feel too. He’s a
monster. Adrien has been playing with Cyrille for at least five
Michael Valeanu is also a long-time member of Cyrille Aimee’s band
and a masterful guitar player in his own right. He earned a
diploma in Jazz studies in Paris and then moved to NYC to study at
the New School program in Jazz and Contemporary Music In 2010, he
was selected to participate in the Betty Carter Jazz Ahead program
at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
The quintet is rounded out by Dani Danor on drums and Shawn Conley
on bass. Danor studied at the New England Conservatory. When he’s
not with Cyrille, he plays with the Balkan band “Tipsy Oxcart” and
several other groups. Shawn Conley’s career as a bass player
started in high school as basist for the Honolulu Symphony. He won
first place in the 2009 International Society of Bassists Jazz
Competition, and has performed with Sting, Peter Gabriel, Yo-Yo
Ma, Emanuel Ax and other great musicians.

Doors’ “People are Strange” at the Chicago Jazz Festival:

Django Reinhardt 2016 in Samois-sur-Seine, France, Cyrille’s home
This is one of those “you’d be crazy to miss this” concerts. See
