Honoring our Veterans

November 15, 2018 by Beth Colt

Here at Woods Hole Inn, it is our privilege to celebrate the men and women who have sacrificed their own lives and luxuries to protect our freedom. To that end, we show our thanks by honoring them each year with a complimentary stay on Veterans Day, aiming to provide a relaxing and inviting experience from the moment they walk through our door. This year, on a clear and bright November morning, these special guests gathered in our sunny breakfast room, where they enjoyed the panoramic view of Great Harbor and swapped stories of their service.

Their ages and branches differed, but they shared one similar quality – they were all quick to downplay their sacrifice. John, a 26-year Navy veteran, praised his wife, Elaina, for raising their three children and managing the household on her own during his many absences, while being forced to move the family every three years.“My job was easy. You go on a ship and you do what you have to do. It’s my wife who deserves all the credit. She was home doing the hard part,” he said.

Although Don and Debi live in nearby Mashpee, they were grateful for a much-needed and well-deserved staycation. After graduating from Bourne High School, Don spent four years in the Air Force, and then went on to join the 102nd Fighter Wing at Otis Air National Guard Base. Since staying with us last year, Don and Debi have become part of the Woods Hole Inn family, and because they’re Cape Codders, they know the off-season is often the best season, particularly in Woods Hole, when life moves at a slower pace in our seaside village. When asked what he enjoys about their Veterans Day visit, Don answered simply, “Everything. The food, the people. We can’t say enough about it. We’re taking care of aging parents, and I commute to Boston for work, so it’s important to be close to home,” he said. Debi also enjoys the quaintness of Woods Hole. “We love having dinner and drinks right next door at Quicks Hole Tavern, and the fact that we can walk to everything,” she said. Like his fellow servicemen, Don is also hesitant to accept accolades. “I don’t look at it as a big deal. People rise to the occasion when they are needed,” he said.

Innkeeper Beth Colt and the entire staff here at the Woods Hole Inn are grateful for the chance to roll out the proverbial red carpet each November for these distinguished guests.“Veterans Day is one of our favorite times of the year.  We all look forward to meeting those who have served our country in the military, and thanking them with a free stay in Woods Hole.  Over breakfast, we try to get to know our visitors and hear about their lives,” she said. “It is always a true pleasure making these special connections year after year.  And often they have never been to Woods Hole, so introducing them to our wonderful village is also a great joy.”

We already can’t wait for next year!

Winter Spectacular featuring the Brazen Belles

October 6, 2018 by Beth Colt

Brazen Belles in Woods Hole

There are many special things about this town. One of them, which makes top of the list, is a burlesque troupe made up of local ladies and a whole lot of talent. Every show is filled with song, dance, and “chorus line kicks,” and it brings such a wonderful energy and sass to this sea-side town, especially once the chillier, quieter months set in.  It’s a perfect way to ring in the New Year Cape Cod style!

Brazen Belles perform in Woods Hole

Back by popular demand for the third year in a row, we will be offering two complimentary tickets, valued at $60, to the Brazen Belles’ 7th Annual Winter Spectacular (only valid for guests staying at the Inn). Get an early start to the holidays with an inside peek as to what makes this town extra special. Enjoy a delicious housemade breakfast the next morning in our sunny ocean-facing breakfast room — the perfect way (in our opinion) to relax before the craziness of the holidays.  Can’t stay two nights, no problem! Queens start at $99 and Kings at $119. Book now, because we have a feeling the Inn will fill up quickly for this special weekend.  Call (508) 495-0248 to reserve and see pricing details here.

Secrets to Celebrating the Holidays on Cape Cod, Your Cape Cod Holiday

October 4, 2018 by Beth Colt

Many people flock to Cape Cod for sea and surf, but just as many think the holiday season is the most wonderful time of year! Make Woods Hole your home base to experience all the Cape and Islands have to offer for a quintessential Cape Cod holiday. The Falmouth Chamber of Commerce presents the Holidays by the Sea Weekend, this year from December 7-9, kicking off Friday night with caroling at historic Nobska Light. The fun continues on Saturday morning with the 6th Annual Jingle Jog 5K & Kid’s Elf Run, and the evening will feature an array of activities when Main Street closes to automobile traffic for the Holiday Stroll in Falmouth Village. The shops will be open for special evening hours prior to the Annual Lighting of the Green which features holiday music from the Falmouth Brass Band. Americana at its best!

Nothing says Christmas like an old-fashioned holiday bazaar, and the Renaissance Fair is Woods Hole’s one-of-a-kind version that doesn’t disappoint. This time-honored tradition will be held on Saturday, December 1 from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Community Hall on Water Street, just steps from the Inn. Boasting an array of vendors and artisans offering hand-made wares such as pottery, apparel, jewelry, jams and jellies, and art of various media, the event also features singing, children’s games, lunch and baked goods, and a holiday wreath sale. Shop like a local while supporting the Cape Cod art community. Win-win. Take a trip to yesteryear and check out Holidays at Highfield at the 1878 restored estate of the Beebe family, which features a gift gallery and elaborate decorations, on weekends beginning November 30 through December 9. For something totally different, don’t miss the Brazen Belles Winter Spectacular right across the street at the Landfall Restaurant from December 19-21, featuring irreverent entertainment by Cape Cod’s premier burlesque group.

If you’re looking to venture beyond Falmouth, then be sure to check out Gardens Aglow at Heritage Museums & Gardens, located in Sandwich, Cape Cod’s oldest town. The expansive grounds are illuminated from November 23-December 30, and the tour also includes festive indoor holiday decor and numerous activities around the grounds and galleries. While you’re there, be sure to take in Sandwich Glass Museum’s 9th Annual Glassblower’s Christmas, which runs November 12- December 30. For an Island experience, head to the Steamship Authority Ferry Terminal just steps from the Inn, followed by a short boat ride for Christmas in Edgartown, December 6-8. Take a drive to Hyannis where you can pick up either the Steamship or the Hyline ferry for the Nantucket Christmas Stroll, which runs from November 30 – December 2. Contrary to popular belief, the Pilgrims first landed in Provincetown, and their 1620 arrival is celebrated each year starting Thanksgiving week with the annual Lighting of Pilgrim Monument, one of Provincetown’s most photographed landmarks. This year’s event will be held on November 21 from 5 to 7 PM, with the lighting at approximately 6. This iconic symbol of hope and new beginnings will be illuminated until early January.

Whatever you do, don’t miss the highlight of Falmouth’s Holidays by the Sea Weekend, the 55th Annual Christmas Parade, which steps off from Dillingham Avenue on Sunday, December 9 at noon. Known as Southeastern Massachusetts’ largest holiday parade, thousands of spectators pack the parade route each year to take in decorated floats, marching bands from all over the region, costumed characters, and majestic Clydesdales followed by Santa himself. This year’s theme is “Unwrap the Magic of Falmouth,” and is not to be missed! Join us in our seaside village as we celebrate the season with the perfect Cape Cod holiday celebrations.

Sea Around Us Weekend celebrating the legacy of Rachel Carson in Woods Hole

September 18, 2018 by Beth Colt

bed and breakfast Cape CodCelebrating the legacy of environmentalist pioneer Rachel Carson, crowds came out in droves this past weekend in Woods Hole free movie screenings, science in the street for kids, guided bike rides, selfies with a real-life Rachel Carson and most popular of all, the rebirth of the famous “Anything But A Boat” race in Woods Hole’s Great Harbor.

What is “Anything But A Boat” you ask?  An Un-Boat is constructed from anything but that which one might imagine you can make a boat — no paddle boards, no surf boards, no fiberglass  — you get the picture.  Eight intrepid creators entered the race with air mattresses, cardboard, bubble wrap and Styrofoam concoctions on Sunday September 16th at Waterfront Park.

Cpae Cod Bed and Breakfast fun activities

About four hundred people showed up to observe the race which went off at noon led by race manager Shelley Dawicki (from NOAA) and her talented team of volunteers.  “Bamboo Banger” captained by Willie Hatfield with Kelly McKeon finished the race well ahead, winning first prize — a free stay at Woods Hole Inn plus a $100 gift certificate from Black Dog Tavern.bed and breakfast Cape Cod

The “Warrier Princess” led by Julie Allen raced to honor a daughter fighting breast cancer and finished with a special award for the “Biggest Heart” of the day.

The “Sons of Carpentry” won “Best Engineered” award with this elaborate, unique paddle boat.  Led by Captain Zachary Grace, the carpenters are employed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic (WHOI) carpentry shop but were quick to share that materials and effort were all their own.  What a great team!

After the awards, viewers wandered over to Luscombe Ave to partake in a block party with free music from Crooked Coast and Brother’s Rye on the shells at both Landfall Restaurant and Quicks Hole Taqueria from 2 – 6 pm.

Beach balls entertained the youngest members of the crowd while beer donated from the Long Trail Brewing Company was sold with proceeds over $800 donated to Falmouth Water Stewards, a local non profit working on water quality issues in Falmouth.  The event was produced by the Woods Hole Business Association in collaboration with the science community.

Rooster and Maryanne Fricke of Nobska Farm hot sauce fame danced up a storm, and many party-goers dreamed of a day when we might shut the whole block down for this sort of end-of-summer fun.  Maybe next year!!

To close, please enjoy this video of local phenom musician Ben Patterson with his band Brother’s Rye.  This photo essay is brought to you by Woods Hole Inn.  You will not regret a decision to come visit us in Woods Hole one of these late summer days.

St. Patrick’s Day Special!

January 21, 2018 by Beth Colt

St. Patrick’s Day falls on a Friday this year, which we would argue is the perfect excuse to celebrate the fun holiday all weekend long! We’ll be “cheers-ing” with cold beers at the Tavern (right down the road), and we’re inviting you to join in on the fun, Cape Cod style.

Book your visit at the Woods Hole Inn and receive 10% off your stay, plus 2 Guinness beers and a small Charcuterie plate at Quicks Hole Tavern, just a skip and a hop from the Inn and across from the Martha’s Vineyard Steamship Authority. Take a stroll down picturesque Falmouth Main Street, or venture to the Vineyard for a sneak peak at the cozy off season (we’ll direct you to our favorite lunch spots). Who would say no to a yummy weekend on the Cape, right as the weather starts to warm up, and the salty spray from the ocean smells of summer?

Cider Press in Woods Hole

November 7, 2017 by Beth Colt

waterfront sunset Woods Hole

The invitation comes in your mailbox, hand written with neighborly love.  A simple message — join us on Saturday afternoon for the annual Woods Hole cider press.  Bring your own apples, but only if they are free.  The Saturday in question dawns unseasonable warm, so you stroll over to this casual gathering on the lawn near the Woods Hole Oceanographic Challenger House.

autumn foliage fall Woods Hole

Safe to say, le tout Woods Hole is in attendance.  Dad’s with baby’s strapped on, kids of all ages chasing a sugar high, grandparents struggling with the old wooden press and shoveling apple remnants into a well worn Garden Way cart. Even a few guests of the Woods Hole Inn, welcomed like old family friends with fresh pressed cider with maybe a nip of good bourbon.

Long afternoon shadows and views out over Little Harbor with Martha’s Vineyard island shimmering in the distance.  A nice breeze coming in from the southwest.  A few of the old salts talking about how it would have been a good day for a knockabout race, but who knew it would remain this warm so long this year?  Still in shirtsleeves.

autumn events Cape Cod

An endless supply of fresh pressed cider is passed around and the sweets table is laden with home made goodies as well as a box or two of Dunkin Donuts.  No one wants to show up to the Cider Press empty handed.  Don’t miss Jenny’s apple spice cake — it’s the bomb, says her friend.

Time to walk home, sugar buzzed and happy.  What a great community is drawn to the surrounding natural beauty of Woods Hole.  What fun at the end of a busy summer to reconnect at an authentic local cider press.  Feeling pretty lucky to live in Woods Hole Cape Cod on a day like today.

Thanksgiving Cape Cod

August 22, 2017 by Beth Colt

Thanksgiving on Cape Cod, a time for long walks on quiet beaches, great conversations with friends & family, memorable meals including our favorite — freshly baked pies with home made crusts and plenty of real whipped cream.

Cape Cod holiday destination

Ahh, the holidays are upon us with all their festive glory.  Here in Woods Hole, we like to celebrate Thanksgiving Cape Cod-style — adding to our sea glass collection, picking up the turkey from our local farm, making relish with cranberries just harvested off the Falmouth bogs, taking long walks in Beebe Woods with friends.

Woods Hole, Cape Cod thanksgiving

The very first Thanksgiving happened just a few miles from here at Plimouth Plantation, and so we consider it fitting to break bread in the shadow of our forefathers, on this sandy spit we call Cape Cod.  It’s a great time of year to visit Plimouth Plantation , an easy drive from the Woods Hole Inn.

Fall is especially beautiful, with sunsets coming earlier each day — the glowering orange orb glowing off the water at last light.  Local dining options abound including Quicks Hole Tavern, Water Street Kitchen, Captain Kidd, and Landfall all open in Woods Hole.  Both Seacrest Hotel in North Falmouth and Harborview Hotel in Edgartown (a short ferry ride away) offer excellent banquets on Thanksgiving Day.

Plenty of areas to sit and knit in comfort. Program was awesome with the famous Norah Gaughan! I hope they offer something like this again. Breakfast yummy. Food at Quick’s Hole was delicious. The Woods Hole Film Festival

July 28, 2014 by Beth Colt

Woods Hole Film FestivalIf variety is the spice of life, Woods Hole and its film festival are hot! The village is home to world-renowned scientific institutions and historic buildings and a plethora of delightful eating establishments, beaches, and cultural events like contra dancing, jazz and folk concert series, art shows, and the Woods Hole Film Festival. And the film festival is a delectable mix of feature length narrative films, documentaries, animation, and “shorts,” and the content and settings of these mostly independent films are wildly diverse.

A few unconventional and intriguing ones that I plan to catch this year include Wicker Kittens, Marmato, and Antarctica. Just the title, Wicker Kittens, is enough to awaken curiosity, but an annual jigsaw puzzle competition in Minnesota – that’s a must see phenomenon! More seriously, Marmato, set in a 500 year old mining town in Columbia, is a film described as “a canvas of magic realism and the confrontation with globalized mining.” Antarctica, on the other hand, captures the issues of data recording in the frozen tundra with limited time – should be a packed audience, so get your tickets early! There is lots of light-hearted fare as well, like on Kids’ Day. This year, this fun event features a movie inspired by the famous children’s series, “The Boxcar Children.”

Don’t miss what Movie Magazine calls “one of the 25 coolest film festivals in the world.” The Woods Hole Film Festival runs until Saturday, August 2nd, and, there is much more than films with music, parties, and filmmaker discussions to round out the week. Check out the full listing of movies and events at www.woodsholefilmfestival.org/. -from guest blogger Gwen Martin

Historic Highfield Hall & Gardens (Falmouth MA lodging)

July 17, 2014 by Beth Colt

Falmouth MA near Woods HoleWoods Hole is a village of the town of Falmouth, MA on Cape Cod,  and Historic Highfield Hall and Gardens is three miles up the road.  Highfield Hall is a restored house surrounded by gardens and now used for art exhibits, cultural gatherings and events.  The Woods Hole Inn is a perfect jumping off point for your Falmouth, MA lodging to explore Highfield Hall and the arts on Cape Cod.

This season at Highfield Hall, don’t miss the exhibit called “Portals and Passageways.”   As you drive up Highfield Drive, you will see trees that have been “yarn bombed” with brightly colored knitting.  This fabulous burst of color turns an everyday forest into a gaggle of well-dressed statues, anthropomorphizing trees into stately ladies on a stroll from the Hall.  What a perfect welcome, a cheeky hello if you like, to this unusual exhibit.

The guided walk starts with “Fragment House,” a glass sculpture by Danielle Krcmar made with sea-glass suspended from wire and steel.  Stepping in this little cubicle, you look back up at the main house and reflect on the nature of habitats, the joy of windows, and the wonder of scale.  Poetry is carved on glass panels, the light glints on the fragments, and the summer wind breezes past you for a magical effect.  You know what they say about people in glass houses…

As you wander the paths around the gardens, you will find other wonders from local artists — a series of mirrors installed in thin strips like trees in the woods (Andrea Thompson), a mossy path leading to a beautiful copper beech tree (Wendy Bagley), a geodesic peat moss hut called “Pan’s Portico” (Ben Silva), a felt covered sign inviting you to explore “Hither and Yon” (Salley Mavor) and much more.  These sculptures and installations remind us of our relationship to the wild, of the nature of man’s need to build shelter, of the beauty of the dappled sunlight in the forest, of how lucky we are to have such skilled artists and craftsmen living on Cape Cod.

Great credit for the very existence of this resource in town goes to a group of dedicated preservationists who reclaimed Highfield Hall from the jaws of the wrecking ball and turned it into one of the best arts resources on Cape Cod.  Special thanks to Jim and Ruth Clark, and others, for leading the charge.  Our town is a better place for their generosity.  One visit to Historic Highfield Hall will convince you, and if you are looking for the perfect lodging Falmouth, MA, please check out the rooms at the Woods Hole Inn, just three miles down Woods Hole Road from this cool spot.

Fourth of July

July 4, 2013 by Beth Colt

Woods Hole Fourth of July

Woods Hole has the most distinctive Fourth of July parade in America.  Organized by the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), this gathering of young scientists celebrating our nations birth is filled with costumes, dancers, and balloons.  Representing things like cell reproduction, neurobiology, marine resources and much more, student laugh and dance their way down a spectator-packed Water Street.

Tossing candy along the path, the parade takes starts at noon every year and takes about fifteen minutes.  One fun tradition is that after students cross the drawbridge, they break into a serious water-balloon fight, a nice respite from a hot Cape Cod day.

On the porch of the Woods Hole Inn, we offer cool lemonade, iced tea and Charlene’s fresh baked cookies to as many people who will fit.  It’s a great birds-eye view of the whole event.

Half hour later, the streets are empty as people dash back to the beach.  Ahh, Cape Cod summah.

Hope to see you there next year!  Happy Fourth.
