Ok, I’ll admit I am partial to the events of the Woods Hole social calendar, and think Woods Hole is clearly the nicest small town on Cape Cod. For the record, the Smithsonian Magazine agrees with me, naming Woods Hole in it’s top twenty best places to live issue this year (at an impressive #5 nationwide!). In any case, the spring festival on May Day in Woods Hole is one of the finest events of the season, especially when the weather cooperates as it did today.
Imagine a bright green ballpark, full sun shining and huge white clouds drifting across the sky… A few hundred people gathered in clusters around the lobster roll stand, the hot dog grill, the Maypole… Kids running and playing, flipping over trampolines, climbing in the “lighthouse” play structure… Cherry blossom sweetness drifting, salt in the air, a wind cool off the sea still chilly from winter.
The streets are filled with summer people, locals out of their houses to garden, tourists on their way to Martha’s Vineyard. Memorial Day weekend in Woods Hole feels a bit like someone turned the light switch on, it happens so suddenly that we transform from this sleepy little village to the hustle bustle of summer.
May Day in Woods Hole is a wonderful celebration — from artisans selling wares, to the local preschool lemonade stand, to the jugglers, a pie eating contest, cod tacos at Quicks Hole and so much more. Make the Woods Hole Spring Festival part of your summer plans, you will not regret it!
